Wheelchair Accessible Pilgrimage in Ayodhya — Complete Guide for Senior Citizens
Every Devotee Deserves Ram Lalla's Darshan
At Divi Tour & Travels, we believe deeply that every devotee — regardless of age, physical ability, or mobility — deserves the blessing of Ram Lalla's darshan. For many elderly parents and differently-abled pilgrims, visiting Ayodhya is a lifelong dream and spiritual goal. Making that dream a reality, safely and comfortably, is our greatest privilege.
In this guide, we share everything you need to know about planning an accessible pilgrimage to Ayodhya — from wheelchair services and accessible vehicles to the best routes, priority darshan options, and tips that will make the journey as stress-free as possible.
Accessible Infrastructure at Ram Mandir
The new Ram Mandir complex has been built with accessibility in mind:
- Ramp access: Wheelchair ramps are available at all major entry and exit points of the temple complex.
- Priority darshan queue: Senior citizens (above 60 years), differently-abled pilgrims, and those with valid medical certificates are entitled to a separate priority queue at Ram Mandir, significantly reducing waiting time.
- Battery-operated vehicles: Free battery-operated golf carts operate within the temple complex campus to help mobility-impaired devotees navigate the large space.
- Seating areas: Rest areas with seating are available throughout the complex.
- Wheelchairs on loan: The temple trust provides wheelchairs free of charge at the entry gate (subject to availability — we recommend carrying your own or hiring from us).
Our Wheelchair-Accessible Cab Services
Divi Tour & Travels operates specially equipped wheelchair-accessible vehicles for pilgrims who require them:
- Force Urbania (12-seater): Our primary wheelchair-accessible vehicle — wide sliding door, ramp access, spacious interior that accommodates a standard wheelchair without folding.
- Modified Innova Crysta: For smaller groups — modified with a fold-down step and extra legroom for elderly passengers.
- Wheelchair on hire: We can arrange standard and reclining wheelchairs for the duration of your visit. Folding wheelchairs for vehicle use available at ₹200 per day.
- Trained attendants: On request, we can provide a trained, patient attendant who will push the wheelchair and assist with temple navigation throughout the darshan.
The Accessible Darshan Route in Ayodhya
Our drivers and guides know exactly which routes are wheelchair-friendly and which temple entry points have ramp access. Here is the accessible route we follow:
- Ram ki Paidi (Saryu Ghat): New steps with railing have been installed. The ghat is now partially accessible. Elderly devotees can view the river and participate in Aarti from the upper viewing level without descending to the water.
- Hanuman Garhi: The 76 steps are challenging but can be attempted with assistance. For those who cannot climb, there is a smaller Hanuman shrine at the base of the hill where darshan can be taken comfortably.
- Ram Mandir: Fully ramp-accessible. Priority queue available. Our guide will escort you to the priority queue entry point.
- Kanak Bhawan: Ground level access, no steps to navigate. One of the most accessible temples in Ayodhya.
- Dashrath Mahal: Partially accessible — the outer courtyard is easy; the inner sections have a few steps.
Tips for Senior Citizen Pilgrims
- Travel during October–February — Ayodhya summers are severe (April–June can reach 45°C). The cool months are far more manageable for elderly pilgrims.
- Start early. Arrive at Ram Mandir by 7:00 AM on weekdays. Shorter queues and cooler temperatures in the morning make the experience much more comfortable.
- Carry medical documents. A medical certificate specifying the condition (if claiming priority darshan) and a list of current medications is essential.
- Stay hydrated and carry snacks. Darshan can take 2–4 hours including travel. Carry ORS packets, glucose biscuits, and at least 1 litre of water per person.
- Book accommodation near Ram Mandir. Hotels within 1 km of the temple reduce travel fatigue significantly. We can recommend accessible hotels with ground-floor rooms and attached bathrooms.
- Inform us of special requirements in advance. If your family member uses a specific type of wheelchair, has dietary restrictions, needs a reclining seat, or requires frequent rest stops — tell us when booking so we can plan accordingly.
What Our Customers Say

This trip was the most meaningful of our family's life." — Rajesh Sharma, Lucknow
"We came from Gujarat with my father who is 78 and had a hip replacement last year. The Urbania cab was spacious and comfortable, the guide was incredibly patient, and the priority queue at Ram Mandir meant we spent barely 20 minutes waiting. Outstanding service." — Priya Patel, Ahmedabad
