Ayodhya to Nepal Pilgrimage — Complete Travel Guide 2025

From the Land of Lord Ram to the Kingdom of Lord Shiva

One of the most complete and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage journeys you can undertake from Ayodhya is the sacred circuit that extends across the border into Nepal โ€” visiting Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, the sacred Janakpur Dhaam (birthplace of Goddess Sita), and Muktinath Temple, among others.

This journey connects two of the most important Ramayan locations: Ayodhya (birthplace of Lord Ram) and Janakpur (birthplace of Sita Mata) โ€” the divine couple's origin stories linked in a single pilgrimage. Add the supreme Jyotirlinga of Pashupatinath and the journey becomes a complete spiritual odyssey.

Why Janakpur is Essential for Ramayan Devotees

Janakpur (in the Madhesh Province of Nepal) is believed to be the ancient Mithila โ€” the kingdom of King Janak and the birthplace of Goddess Sita. This is where Ram first saw Sita at Swayamvar (the ceremony where Sita chose her husband by garlanding), and where he broke the Shiva Dhanush (bow) to win her hand in marriage.

The Janaki Mandir in Janakpur is one of the most beautiful temples in the Indian subcontinent โ€” a sprawling white marble palace-temple built in the "Koiri" style, dedicated to Sita. The idol of Sita here is adorned with jewelry and is extraordinarily beautiful. Every year in November, the Vivah Panchami festival commemorates the divine wedding of Ram and Sita โ€” drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees from India and Nepal.

Pashupatinath Temple โ€” Lord Shiva's Own City

Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu is one of the most sacred temples in the world for Hindus โ€” a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the four most important temples of Lord Shiva (along with the Char Dham). It sits on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River.

The temple complex is ancient โ€” references to it appear in texts over 1,500 years old. The main lingam is Panchavaktra โ€” five-faced, representing Shiva in his five aspects. Indian nationals can enter the inner sanctum freely; the experience of standing before this ancient lingam is profoundly moving.

  • Location: Deopatan, Kathmandu, Nepal
  • Timings: 4:00 AM โ€“ 12:00 PM, 5:00 PM โ€“ 9:00 PM
  • Entry for Indians: Free (show Indian ID at gate)
  • Aarti: Evening Aarti at 6:00 PM โ€” spectacular

Other Sacred Sites in Nepal for Indian Pilgrims

  • Muktinath Temple: High in the Mustang district (3,710m altitude), this temple is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. One of the 108 Divya Desam Vishnu temples and a key Shaiva pilgrimage site. Reached by flight to Pokhara then jeep to Muktinath.
  • Budhanilkantha: Features a massive reclining Vishnu idol carved from a single black stone, floating in a pond. Extraordinary and free to visit.
  • Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple): One of the most iconic Buddhist stupas, offering panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley.
  • Dakshinkali Temple: Sacred Kali temple in the forests south of Kathmandu, popular for Tuesday and Saturday rituals.

Visa and Border Crossing

Indian citizens do NOT need a visa for Nepal. You can cross the border with any valid Indian photo ID โ€” Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, or driving licence.

The main crossing points from UP/Bihar are:

  • Sonauliโ€“Bhairahawa: Most common. 280 km from Gorakhpur (near Ayodhya). Cross here by road, then take bus/cab to Pokhara or Kathmandu.
  • Raxaulโ€“Birganj: Good option if approaching from Bihar or eastern UP.
