Ayodhya to Mathura Vrindavan — 2-Day Divine Pilgrimage Guide

The Land of Ram Meets the Land of Krishna

A pilgrimage that combines Ayodhya (birthplace of Lord Ram) with Mathura and Vrindavan (birthplace and childhood home of Lord Krishna) is one of the most spiritually complete journeys a devotee can undertake. You're visiting the homes of two of the most beloved avatars of Vishnu โ€” Ram and Krishna โ€” in a single, blessed trip.

The two cities are approximately 450 km apart by road. With Divi Tour & Travels' 2-day Ayodhyaโ€“Mathuraโ€“Vrindavan package, you can cover both in comfort, experiencing the unique spiritual flavour of each sacred city.

Mathura โ€” The Birthplace of Lord Krishna

Mathura is where Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell at midnight, to his mother Devaki and father Vasudeva, while his evil uncle Kansa ruled the city. This city has been an active pilgrimage centre for over 2,500 years and is one of the seven holiest cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism โ€” along with Ayodhya.

The city sits on the western bank of the Yamuna river, and its banks โ€” the Vishram Ghat โ€” are the spiritual heart of Mathura. Every evening, a mesmerizing Yamuna Aarti takes place here that rivals Varanasi's Ganga Aarti in beauty and devotion.

Key Places to Visit in Mathura

  • Krishna Janmabhoomi: The most sacred site in Mathura โ€” the exact spot (now a temple complex) where Lord Krishna was born. The prison cell where he was born is preserved inside. Security is strict โ€” no cameras, no mobiles inside the sanctum.
  • Dwarkadhish Temple: One of the most ancient and beautiful temples of Mathura, dedicated to Lord Krishna as the King of Dwaraka. The temple is famous for its elaborate Shringar (adornment) of the idol, which changes multiple times daily.
  • Vishram Ghat: The ghat where Krishna rested after defeating Kansa. The evening Yamuna Aarti here is spectacular and more intimate than Varanasi's Ganga Aarti.
  • Govardhan Hill: 26 km from Mathura, this is the hill that Lord Krishna lifted on his little finger for 7 days to protect the people of Vrindavan from Indra's wrath. The Govardhan Parikrama (circumambulation of the hill) is one of the most important acts of devotion for Krishna devotees โ€” a 21 km walk around the sacred hill.

Vrindavan โ€” Where Krishna Played

Vrindavan, just 15 km from Mathura, is where the young Krishna spent his childhood and youth โ€” playing with the gopas (cowherds), stealing butter (the famous makhan chor stories), dancing with the gopis (cowherdesses), and playing his divine flute by the Yamuna. For devotees, every lane, every grove, every ghat in Vrindavan is saturated with Krishna's presence.

Vrindavan has over 5,000 temples โ€” some ancient, some modern โ€” and the atmosphere of devotion here is unlike anywhere else in India. The air itself seems to vibrate with bhajans and the name of Krishna.

Must-Visit Temples in Vrindavan

  • Banke Bihari Temple: The most beloved temple in Vrindavan, where the dark, three-curved idol of Krishna (Banke Bihari) is worshipped. The curtain before the idol opens briefly every few minutes โ€” devotees believe direct eye contact with Banke Bihari for too long causes divine intoxication. The atmosphere is electric, joyful, and deeply moving. Note: no photography allowed.
  • ISKCON Vrindavan: The Krishna-Balaram Mandir built by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness is one of the most beautiful temple complexes in India. The white marble temple is immaculate, the bhajans and kirtans are world-class, and the international devotee community here gives the place a unique atmosphere of global devotion.
  • Prem Mandir: A stunning modern temple built in white Rajasthani marble, dedicated to Radha-Krishna and Sita-Ram. Illuminated at night, it is one of the most photogenic temples in India โ€” the intricate carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayan and Mahabharat are extraordinary.
  • Nidhivan: A mysterious forest in Vrindavan where Krishna is believed to dance the Raas Leela with Radha every night. The trees of Nidhivan appear to embrace each other, and no one is allowed to enter after sunset. The caretakers seal the premises at dusk โ€” and in the morning, offerings left the previous evening are found used and flowers wilted, as if a celebration occurred overnight.
  • Radha Raman Temple: One of the most sacred temples in Vrindavan, where the Radha Raman idol is believed to be self-manifested (swayambhu). One of the few temples where the fire (dhuni) has burned continuously for 500+ years.
